This week marks a few happenings for me in the writing realm. One, Max Giovagnoli's Transmedia Storytelling: Imagery, Shapes and Techniques has released from ETC Press. This academic text digs into the potential and methods behind transmedia stories - stories that span multiple media, like novels written to expand a TV show's universe or ARGs designed to promote an upcoming film. This all matters to me both because the topic is interesting and I was one of two editors on the English translation.
Also this week, I made a remarkable discovery, but I need to tell a little story first.
Near the end of the summer, I discovered that MTV Comics and POW! Entertainment were running a contest to find a new writer and artist for a comic concept from Stan Lee, the legend himself. The concept, called The Seekers, was a sci-fi adventure about aliens who visited Earth in the distant past awakening to determine whether humanity poses a threat to the rest of the universe. Beyond these details, though, there was some latitude in execution, which is where writing comes in, I suppose.
The winners were announced last week at New York ComicCon, which quite snuck up on me, since there were several rounds of voting beforehand and I'd completely missed them. I guess I expected e-mail notification or something. Anyway, needless to say, I didn't win, but when I realized that the contest had already ended, I started digging around to see how it had gone after the fact.
Here's what I found. (You'll need to scroll down ever so slightly.)

Yeah, it was a total surprise to me, too. But even with not winning the contest itself, I am thrilled that I reached the semi-finals, as selected by MTV Comics people. It sounds like there was some stiff competition, and I'm honored to have been counted among this number.
Since that's done, you can read my entry from the above site or in my portfolio, since, like, I suppose it should probably be there.
